Wargs on the Prowl by KatePfeilschiefter Wargs on the Prowl by KatePfeilschiefter
What is that Lamp
Which Lights up Men,
But Flame Engulfs it,
And Wargs Grasp after it Always?
--------------------------------------------

My entry to the Middle Earth Design contest. My idea of wargs has always been inspired by Norse mythology.

If you'd like you can rate my submission here on their site: [link]

It'd be most appreciated.
Thanks!

Hm, this is a shame. That these kinds of wargs didn't make an appearance in the movies, I mean! Are these bad boys some kind of Morder breed because, if so, they dwarf the Isengard ones in comparison. Plus, nice on referring to Norse mythology and how long did this take you to finish up? Either way, I cannot get over how awesome this scene is. Fantasy wise, not realistic wise, of course. If it was real... well, I'd have crapped myself by now. Lol. Excellent, excellent work here, bro. Clap

Really awesome!

I'd like to ask, if I may use this great artwork as an illustration for my free card game licensed under creative commons? Visit my profile, if you would like to see some examples...

that nose looks like it would be incredibly vulnerable to any physical punishment, I feel like if one of those wargs accidentally bumped into a tree/rock/hillside/small-furry-animal it would cry for three days and then its nose would fall off.

Thankfully cartilage is relatively durable and our noses do not fall off when either punched or tickled, nor do the noses of any other creature. Humor aside, I justify this based on similarly flexible proboscis found on animals like moles and echidnas. Even bears' noses are flexible and capable of twitch movement when sniffing after prey, and shark snouts are pronounced and pointed but that doesn't stop them from chomping down on seals.

Long story short, I like pointy noses. And even if every design choice can't be justified based on efficiency it's fun sometimes to make something that you think looks cool without worrying about adhering to absolute realism.

Wargs ARE Norse mythology. I like how you made them more of the shadowy, demon-phantoms that are in the book than the ugly mastiffs that were in the movies.

well Warg is old swedish for wolf

:iconsupercj:

No, vargr is. Warg is the anglicized version. Varg is used today as the modern swedish word for wolf.

Tha'ts weird cuz Tolkien himself has said that's where he got the name from. and I know varg is swedish for wolf, I am swedish

The vargr are Fenrir, Hati, and Sköll, so Tolkien may have gotten warg from varg, but this is the ultimate base of the two. Are you swedish as in swedish ancestry, or actually from Sweden?

I'm actually from Sweden, why?

I've often had people try to tell me something about a language without being a native speaker (which would be like me calling myself a German, even though I'm about a third German from both sides of my family, and then trying to explain something that may be absolutely wrong about the language, but insisting it's correct because I'm a German). I only know about the vargr because I was reading about Tolkien's wargs and looked them up and found out they were mythological, but I double-checked myself so I wouldn't look like an idiot talking about a language I don't speak.

Well I am proof of that just because you speak a language doesn't mean you know everything about it, I only figured since Tolken said he got "warg" from old swedish and it's spelled varg today that "warg" was how it was spelled before. So you taught me something about my own language today.

So keep it up man, let facts speak for themselves and don't let someone else scare you of just because they're from the country of the subject, I mean you taught me something today :)
