Ichneumon Sketch by KatePfeilschiefter Ichneumon Sketch by KatePfeilschiefter
Quick concept sketch that I took to a semi finish of a creature for the Aerie: The Ichneumon.
In medieval zoology the Ichneumon (in actuality the Egyptian mongoose) is the enemy and killer of dragons, as well as serpents and crocodiles. Dragons in ye olden times were interchangeable with snakes, and anything that could kill serpents was treated as the enemy of the dragon in myth.

In thinking for the Aerie, these will be large creatures; lion-sized, fearless, and coated with porcupine-like quills. They're not capable of tangling with adult dragons, but will sneak into dragon dens and kill hatchlings. If the Ichneumon should happen upon a young drakling out on its own, it may also try to ambush it; savaging the drakling with bites to the neck before its prey can fight back.

Your color/rendering is always so attractive, at every stage :B I love how you've really been able to develop your aesthetic! It's consistent and really cool, I think you're in professional territory already.

For this guy, I love his little tooth and how solid the hard forms in the anatomy are- I can tell the difference between the fleshy and bony surfaces, it's really convincing. The only thing that could be clearer is the hips, I think? Giant, ferocious killer porcupines. Who couldn't love it.

Thanks! I hope to develop these guy more in the future. Right now I think he's too reminiscent of an actual Egyptian Mongoose. I'm going to try and make him look larger, and more dangerous in the future.
