Deadly Penguins by KatePfeilschiefter Deadly Penguins by KatePfeilschiefter
Convergent evolution interests me, and this has no basis is any of it.
Polar-bear Penguin, Raptor Penguin, and Wolverine Penguin are all ready for the kill.

Have you done this with other animals yet?
cyborg450 Featured By Owner Edited Jul 18, 2015  Student
This is very very creative.

At first, I thought they were mating. :p

Have you ever heard of the penguins of Leng in one of Lovecraft's stories? They are supposed to be eyeless cave-dwelling offshoots of penguins that are six-feet tall with razor-sharp beaks. Perhaps you could derive a penguin variant off of them since eyeless birds look very menacing indeed.

Yeah, I have a book of Lovecraft stories, they might be fun to do

Awesome idea and brilliantly done. In he polar bear and raptor one, are those real teeth or horn spikes from the beak?
Ruschman Featured By Owner Jul 15, 2014
Man, I'd call penguin # 1 and 3 "Owlbears", from the D&D series.

Lternative evolution is also interesting. Ever read The New Dinosaurs by Dougal Dixon?
KatePfeilschiefter Featured By Owner Aug 9, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Nope, how is it?
Mazamba Featured By Owner Dec 13, 2012
Fairly interesting. Imagine what would have happened if the dinosaurs had never gone extinct and had evolved in their own rate. Obviously there would be no humans since mammals took advantage of the niche they left behind.
KatePfeilschiefter Featured By Owner Dec 14, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
indeed, speculative evolution is fun though

My personal theory is that the T-rex would have completely lost the vestigial arms.
KatePfeilschiefter Featured By Owner Jun 18, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
But how would he do push-ups? Or give tiny neck massages to his darling tyrannosaurs wife?
Mazamba Featured By Owner Jun 20, 2013
T-rex females were likely larger than the males and complete bitches. Plus, there's not much to do push ups with.

LOVE 'EM! the raptor peguin reminds me of the cara-killlers from "The Future is Wild"! also Keleken or a lil bit like titanis. ever since i saw ur pic ive been riding the bird wave.

I've always liked the concept of quadrupedal birds. The arms look pretty cool. Makes me think of a big buffalo-shaped penguin I drew once.

The "penguins" will dominate the world!!
I love it

Entomologia Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2011
Wow, what a creatures! All different types, but yet so similar, thanks to penguin-base. I can't decide, which one is my favourited. Maybe raptor with his deadly wings? Or bear (i can imagine, how nice he walks and runns)?
DSil Featured By Owner Sep 16, 2011  Student General Artist
Brilliant designs! The raptor is my favorite, natch. I like how the wing adapted into a killer claw. I had developed something similar for a predatory bipedal pterosaur.
AJTalon Featured By Owner Sep 14, 2011  Student Writer
Fantastic detail and great imagery! It's fascinating to think of how they could have evolved.
SwordSaint001 Featured By Owner Sep 14, 2011
Very interesting concepts. i like your style. It does kinda make you wonder what will happen to the fauna of Antarctica when it drifts to warmer latitudes, how will they adapt to the new situation. will they become extinct, or will they thrive and take on the newly opened niches made available... Which will take to the lad first, penguins, seals, or even the Skuas and other sea birds.... Hmmmmmmm sorry babbling.....
TheJabberwokk Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2011  Student General Artist
I really dig the polar bear one... to me it seems the most realistic. The raptor looks like it'd be in a sci-fi setting (like alien experiments kinda sci-fi) and the wolverine penguin makes me think that it'd work in a fantasy environment...

very nice designs all three of them!

Almost looks like the sea creature from Myst II: Riven [link]
KatePfeilschiefter Featured By Owner Sep 10, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Kinda, though those remind me more-so of a cross between a plesiosaur and a baleen whale. They're pretty cool though.
Celtic-Watcher Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2011
This is awesome! How do you do the fur/feathers, or can you point me in the direction of a good tutorial/book on it?
KatePfeilschiefter Featured By Owner Aug 25, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
I'm sure there are many tutorials for such things floating around deviantart if you only do a quick search. But I can't point you to any particularly great ones, or a book so specific. The best teacher is nature, find some photos of the animal with the type of fur you'd like to draw and practice sketching the way the hair sits, clumps and reacts to wind.
